Terms of use

Last updated 6 November 2026. Written for parents, carers and teachers. The short version is first.

The short version in plain words

  • Play, learn, print. Use the game, the lessons, the worksheets and the papers to help your own children or the pupils you teach.
  • Don’t pass it on as your own. Please don’t sell, share or upload our papers, worksheets, questions or artwork anywhere else.
  • Paid papers are for one household or one teacher. Buy one copy for each family or teacher who uses it.
  • Be kind with logins. Keep passwords to yourselves and tell us if one gets out.
  • Questions? Email hello@cartana.org.

Who we are

Cartana (the game at cartana.org and the maths lessons, worksheets and test papers at cartana.org/maths) is made by Tom Russell, trading as Cartana, in the United Kingdom. In these terms “we” means Cartana and “you” means anyone using the site, or the parent or carer of a child using it. By using the site you agree to these terms. How we look after personal data is in the privacy notice.

Everything here belongs to Cartana

The game, its islands, characters, stories, questions, answers, revision notes, artwork, music and sounds, and the maths lessons, videos, worksheets, test papers and mark schemes, are © Cartana unless we say otherwise. CARTANA is a trade mark of Tom Russell (UK application UK00004470422). A few recordings, poems and images in the game are used under their own free licences; their credits stay with them.

What you may do

  • Families: play the game, and print and use the worksheets and any papers you have bought, for the children in your household.
  • Teachers and tutors: use the game, lessons and free worksheets with your own pupils, print copies for them, and show them on a screen in your lessons. A paper you have bought may be printed for the pupils you teach yourself.
  • Anyone: link to any page, share our videos through YouTube, and quote a short extract with a credit and a link to cartana.org.

What you may not do

  • Sell, rent or give away our papers, worksheets, questions or artwork, printed or digital, or put them in a bundle or pack of your own.
  • Upload them to another website, shared drive open to the public, resource-sharing site, marketplace or social media.
  • Share a paid paper with other families, teachers or a whole school: each needs their own copy. Ask us about a school licence.
  • Copy the game, its code, its question banks or its artwork, or make something that passes itself off as Cartana.
  • Scrape or download the site’s content in bulk, including to train artificial intelligence systems.
  • Try to get into accounts or parts of the site that aren’t yours, or disrupt the service.

Accounts and logins

A family account is a parent’s or carer’s, and you are responsible for how it is used. During closed testing we create each player’s login by hand for their grown-up. Please keep passwords private and tell us at once if one may be known to someone else; we will change it. We may pause or close an account that breaks these terms, and we will tell the parent why.

Testing and changes

Cartana is in testing. We are changing and adding to it all the time, and something may occasionally go wrong or be unavailable for a while. We keep daily backups of your family’s progress, but we can’t promise the game will always be there or always work perfectly. While it is free to play, we may change or stop any part of it.

Buying papers

Prices are in pounds and include any tax. Payment is taken by Stripe. Because a paper is a download you receive straight away, you agree when you buy that it is delivered at once, which means the usual 14-day right to cancel does not apply once the download has started. If a paper is faulty or not as described, tell us and we will put it right or refund you. Your rights under UK consumer law are not affected.

Our responsibility to you

We take care to make the questions, answers and revision notes accurate and in line with the KS3 national curriculum, but they are revision material, not a guarantee of any result. We are not responsible for losses that come from using the site, except where the law says we must be, and nothing here limits our liability for anything the law does not allow us to limit.

The law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the UK you can also use your own courts. If we change these terms we will update this page and its date.
